Wow. This was unexpected, especially from Renault.
I think we are gonna see more and more european manufacturers creating pick-ups, it must be VWs good sales of the Amarok to blame.

I don’t see all that many Amoraks really quite few. They all seem to be Mitsubishi L200 s or Nissan Navaras (almost exclusively in black).

The Amarok seems to be one of the most popular pickup aroudn here (NZ), I’ve seen more of them (especially in town) than Holden Colorados (the Ford Ranger is the star though).

I see more Amoraks than Rangers though as Leon711 points out the situation is very different down in the south of England than it is where I am just short of the Scottish border. Though I’m also forgetting the Toyota Hilux which is a very popular work vehicle.
In fact the Nissan Navaras and Mitsubishi L200s seem to be dress vehicles which people keep clean and use as a daily vehicle while the Toyota Hiluxs and Land Rover Defenders are visibly used for work and generally abused and the VW Amoraks and Ford Rangers as the odd one outs with not seeing a single one from one week to the next.

That makes me wonder...is the Alaskan based on the new Navara? They look a bit similar and with the whole Renault-Nissan thing I’m sure it’s not far fetched...
Compare especially the side profile...

Found a Wiki article on the Renault Alaskan Concept.

The Renault Alaskan is a pickup to be presented by Renault in 2016 to be marketed mid -2016 . It shares the platform and powertrains of his cousin Nissan Navara as well as components from the Daimler group.
Nevertheless, it’s an essential market for commercial vehicle manufacturers as the segment represents 38 percent of global LCV sales. Renault, along with Daimler (read Mercedes-Benz pickup for 2017) have sought the expertise of alliance partner Nissan
for development of the new truck.
The Renault pickup (Renault Alaskan is the show name, and may still be the production name) will feature the same chassis, suspension and driveline as the Nissan Navara, and so will be powered by the same 2.3-litre engine that’s in the Renault Master.

Well then, I guess that covers a lot of the confusion that I had...has it gotten the official go ahead yet?

I don’t know it’s BATC42 post originally.
But I can’t see why it won’t go ahead. Nissan have a good track record with the Navara and the Pathfinder and I guess Renault want to start making inroads to something more suitable for off road utilitarian to connect the Captur and the Kadjar over to the Kangoo, Trafic and Master.

Found this from Autocar.

The Renault Alaskan concept has been revealed, previewing the company’s planned production pick-up truck which is due to go on sale in 2017.
The Alaskan is due to be the company’s first global pick-up and will be built alongside equivalents from Nissan and Mercedes-Benz , the latter of which is due by 2020 . The production Renault and the Mercedes will share some of their architecture with the Nissan NP300 Navara, although both companies will engineer and design their own final versions to keep their identities intact.
The one-tonne Alaskan comes with 21in wheels, full LED lighting, satin-effect paint and brushed and polished metal finishes on the exterior.
Despite its commercial vehicle nature, Renault is pitching the Alaskan at the private leisure-focused user. As well as what Renault describes as high-quality interior standards and space for five in the cabin, the Alaskan concept also comes with a camera located in the door mirror to film the passing landscape. It is offered with a selection of accessories such as a load bed liner and cover.
The Alaskan comes with the 163bhp 2.3-litre 163hp twin-turbo diesel that features in the Master van. Although there are no official performance figures quoted for the Alaskan, it is capable of a claimed combined economy figure of 40.4mpg in the Master.
The production version of the Alaskan will be revealed in summer 2016 before going on sale in Europe the following summer.
Speaking to Autocar at the Frankfurt motor show, Renault design boss Laurens van den Acker said: “As a design challenge, I Ioved it. You can imagine the reaction in the design studio every time we pulled the covers off it - a large French pick-up is unheard of.
“To design something with no history behind it, with nothing to lose and with every potential customer a conquest was a joy. I loved it. From my experience with Ford in the US I was the only one in the entire team who had any experience if doing a pick-up and that brought a great freedom to the project.”
